Vanilla is the only orchid flower that produces an edible fruit.  Vanilla is an orchid and belongs to the orchidaceous family.  It is a tropical orchid, with over 150 different varieties of Vanilla.  Vanilla has been mixed into chocolate for a long time.

The most common varieties are the Bourbon vanilla bean and the Tahitian vanilla bean.  The majority of vanilla beans used to be grown in Mexico, however today, most vanilla that is grown for commercial uses comes from Madagascar.  Vanilla is also grown today in such tropical places as Costa Rica, Fiji, Hawaii and other Pacific Islands.

Vanilla beans are considered to be a rather time intensive crop to cultivate.  That may explain their high costs.  The plants also may take a long time to cultivate.  It may take up to three years for the vanilla to flower, once planted.  The fruits which grow on the vine (that being the vanilla fruit), resembles the shape of a green bean.  Growers will typically leave the vanilla on the vine to ripen in the sun and develop it’s well known aroma and flavor for at least nine months.

When the vanilla beans are harvested, they are still partially green and do not obtain their black color fully, nor their flavor and aroma until they are cured and dried.

Vanilla is one of the most common and treasured spices used today.  The United States is one of the largest consumers of vanilla.  It is commonly used in baked goods, desserts, drinks, smoothies, raw chocolates, raw snacks, cereals and way too many recipes to mention.  Vanilla is also added to many perfumes, air fresheners, soaps, lotions and detergents.

Vanilla truly has many uses, not only edible but otherwise.
