Mesquite pod meal comes from the mesquite pods that bear from the thorny Mesquite Tree, which is also thought of as a Shrub.  It grows commonly in dry, desert type climates.  In the North American region, it can be found in the desert areas of Texas and California among other states.  

The shrub can grow between 20-40 feet high and more than 100 feet down below the earth to search for sources of water.

Mesquite is a staple superfood that has been used traditionally by Native Americans for many years. It is also a source of food for wildlife, such as desert coyotes and livestock.  

Mesquite pods have had many traditional uses in the Native American culture for food including tea, syrup and ground mesquite pod meal.  The mesquite tree also produces flowers which attract bees, that in turn, produce a fragrant honey.  

The sap from the shrub has been used to makes dyes and glues; the thorns have been made into sewing needles and the wood from the trunk and branches have been used for firewood and arrows.  The bark from the mesquite tree has also been utilized for making fabrics and furnishings.

Mesquite pod meal has a sweet taste and goes well with raw chocolate.  It can be added to flours, sauces, soups, smoothies, teas, deserts, cereals and more.  It has become a modern day staple to many who follow a raw food diet due to it’s natural sweetness, low glycemic impact and ease of use in many recipes.
