Lucuma Powder

ORGANIC LUCUMA POWDERlucuma powder

The exotic Lucuma fruit is an interesting looking fruit.  It resembles something os a small squash on the exterior with a greenish-yellowish color.  Once sliced in half, it resembles the insides of an avocado.  It contains an orange-yellow tinted flesh with a large round pit in the center.

The fruit itself is very starchy and dry.  When eaten, the paste like flesh dissolves quite easily.  It is a very interesting fruit, indeed!  Some people think it tastes custard like or has a bit of a caramel like flavor.
Lucuma is native to the coastal highlands of Peru.  It grows best in high altitudes, above 1,000 meters.

The Lucuma fruit was once known as the "Gold of the Incas".  It was called that due to it’s color and belief to be high in nutritional value. Native to Chili, Ecuador, and the Peruvian highlands, Lucuma is a source of fiber, carbohydrates, beta-carotene, niacin, and iron.

A small portion of the fruit is actually consumed fresh.  The majority of the Lucuma fruit is dehydrated and powdered.  Lucuma powder is often sold and used as flavorings in recipes such as drinks, desserts and ice creams.  Lucuma powder has become a staple in raw superfood diets.

Many people people like to used Lucuma in raw chocolates, smoothies and desserts.  Lucuma makes a wonderful addition to recipes when you need to add a delicate sweetness without being too overwhelmingly sugary.

Besides South American, you may be able to find fresh Lucuma in Hawaii or California, due to the ideal climate.  If you can get ahold of a fresh one, it will certainly be a treat!
