Dates are technically a raw berry that grows from the Date Palm Tree, a palm that has origins in Northern Africa and Eastern Asia.  They tend to grow very well in warmer, drier climates.  Typically, they have a long, ovular shape.

The dates grow in clusters off branches from the palm and can hold anywhere from 500 - 2000 berries.  Dates range in flavors between dry and nutty to rich, buttery and sugary sweet.  Sometimes, you can find them at a local farmers market fresh on the vine.

They can be eaten fresh from the vine, as a lightly sweet and crunchy treat although many people enjoy eating dates in their raw dried form.

There are many different varieties of dates but generally three types: soft, semi-soft and dry.  Typically, you can tell when a date is ripe by the slight wrinkle in the skin and waxy completion.  Dates contain a single seed, which is surrounded by the sweet fleshy part of the fruit.  There is no need to peel as date, as the skin is very delicate and edible.

Dates make a very convenient raw food snack.  They can be carried easily, do not need to be washed or cut and are very compact!  They are absolutely delicious in a variety of ways and are considered to be a very versatile food for many raw food followers.

Dates make an excellent addition to superfood smoothies, as they add a delicate touch of sweetness and a rich creamy texture to the beverage.  Dates can be made into a paste and used in raw nut crusts for pies, used in combination with raw chocolate powder and raw cacao butter to make delicious raw chocolates, diced and used in trail mixes, breakfast cereals, salads, desserts, as a base for puddings, and much more.

Dates are also delicious split in half and stuffed with your favorite nut butter and raw chocolate nibs or frozen and slowly eaten as a treat when you’re wanting to avoid processed sugars.  Toss some dates in a superfood trail mix to sweeten things up a bit and add some sweetness to your raw snacks.

Dates are fat and cholesterol free, and are a source of vitamin A, vitamin C, amino acids, iron, potassium, fiber, and calcium.  They are also an excellent source of carbohydrates.
