ORGANIC CHIA SEEDS
Chia Seeds have been around since 3500 BC. They are thought to have been a prized food crop consumed by the Aztecs. Aztec warriors would bring chia seeds with them on long journeys and attributed the great deal of energy they experienced to the chia seeds they consumed.
It was the Aztecs that had initially begun cultivating chia on a large scale, recognizing it’s many benefits. It was even used for currency, religious rituals and offerings to the Aztec gods. They would also eat it with other grains, grind it into flour and consume it in beverages. It has been been a significant part of the Native American diet of many Central Americans.
The word “Chia” in Mayan, means strength. They probably named it so, due to their belief that chia fueled them throughout their arduous days and gave them an abundance of endurance.
Chia Seeds are a source of naturally occurring antioxidant properties, protein, fiber, carbohydrates, fat, omega 3 fatty acids and minerals including calcium and iron.
When soaked in liquid, chia will swell more than double in size and create a gel like consistency. For this reason, many raw food chefs prize chia for usage in recipes such as chia seed pudding, raw chia breakfast oatmeal, chia-gel tonics and more.
Chia seeds when added to raw chocolates and breakfast cereals also add a nice crunch to the texture. Adding chia to your recipes will also boost the fiber and protein content!
Chia seeds today have been popularized in raw chocolates, many raw food snacks, bottled beverages, breakfast cereals, flours, desserts and more. Chia seeds taste great in raw snacks and superfood smoothies among other culinary treats.
