Black Sesame Seeds are believed to be one of the worlds' first spices. There is also a myth that says that the gods sat around and drank sesame wine before they created the earth.  

Black sesame seeds are a source of antioxidants calcium, also are a source of protein, fat, iron, magnesium,  and phosphorus.  

Black sesame seeds are not hulled, meaning that they retain their outer coverings, where as white sesame seeds have the outer coverings, or hulls removed, as to expose their inner seed.  Black sesame seeds are similar to their white counterpart, although black sesame seeds have a slightly different nutritional profile.   They make a great addition to superfood salads, superfood smoothies and or course raw chocolate.

Black sesame seeds may have up to 60% more calcium than that of white sesame seeds.  Black sesame seeds also have a different flavor than that of white sesame seeds.  The flavor tends to err on the stronger, more pungent side.  The oil content of the seeds is relatively high and ranges between 40 and 60 percent.

Due to their antioxidant level, black sesame seeds have a high resistance to rancidity and can retain a long shelf life.
